Tom L. Bambrick
Tom L. Bambrick, of San Marcos, Texas, beloved and cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, September 3, 2010, at the age of 88. He was born the son of Tavy and Bessie (Wolford) Bambrick, in Houston, Texas on August 29, 1922. Tom graduated from Jeff Davis High School in Houston, Texas. He attended Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La. and was all conference on the 1942 championship football team. He married Juanita Craig on May 8, 1943 in Natchitoches, La. and their marriage was a testimony to friends and family for 67 years. Tom joined the United States Marine Corp in May of 1943 and served as a First Lieutenant with the 6th Marine Division on Okinawa during World War II, the Cold War in Northern China and the Korean Conflict. When he returned from the war, he served as the first athletic director and first football coach with the Spring Branch School District. Lilly W. Norman of San Marcos, Texas, beloved and cherished wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2010, at the age of 90. She was born in Enfield, North Carolina on February 24, 1920, the daughter of Hubert and Nina (Vinson) Whitaker. Lilly loved birds and butterflies, working in her garden and doing crossword puzzles . Being a keen supporter of nature conservation , she especially loved the scenic beauty of the wild and remote Davis Mountains. In her earlier years she enjoyed the pleasurable art of stained glass making. Her parents, and a brother, Hubert Whitaker preceded her in death. Lilly is survived by her husband, Robert Norman, whom she married in the Whitaker Chapel in North Carolina on May 18, 1943; son, Robert B. Anita Barroso Chase of San Marcos, Texas, passed away on Monday, August 23, 2010, at the age of 51. She was born in Shelby, N.C. , on November 26, 1958, to Ortelio and Nellie Barroso. Anita loved to read and had the most wonderful friends in San Marcos, especially Karen, Ronda and Richard. She will be dearly missed by everyone. Her husband, Joseph David Chase, whom she married in Boerne, Texas on April 20, 1991, and a daughter, Stephanie Chase preceded her in death. Nancy Martinez On Monday August 16 @ 3:16 am our beloved Nancy left this world to join the Lord and all the angels. At the time of her death she was surrounded by beloved family and friends. Nancy was born on May 16, 1964 and passed away at the young age of 46. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Florentino & Fileberta Martinez, Juanita Duran and her sister Rebecca Martinez. She is survived by husband, Roland Gomez; daughter, Dana Salazar(Joe); and son, Larry Salazar (Ashley); parents, Leandro (Marty) and Virginia Martinez; sisters, Lydia Juarez (Ernest), Lisa Martinez; and brother, Marty James Martinez(Bertha). She also leaves behind her wonderful nieces and nephews, John Paul Juarez (Christa), Bianca & Amanda Juarez, Gabriela & James Daniel Martinez, and Jonathan Martinez. Eunice McCelvey of San Marcos, Texas, beloved and cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, passed away on Monday, August 16, 2010, at the age of 95. She was born March 3, 1915, in Houston County, Texas, to Walter E. and Ida (Evans) Ellisor. Eunice was a member of the First Baptist Church in San Marcos for many years. Her husband, Robert (R.D.) McCelvey (2008); son-in-law, P.H. Barnes; grandsons, Rob McCelvey and Brett McCelvey; and great-grandson, James Jones preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons, R.B. McCelvey and wife, Becky of Luling, and Rex McCelvey of Cotulla; four daughters, Maxine Barnes of New Braunfels, Shirley Saathoff of San Marcos, Lajean McCelvey of San Antonio, and Jo Jones and husband, Randy of Marble Falls; sister, Nollie Woolley of Houston; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Jose Cruz Jaimes Ramirez of Kyle, Texas, passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2010, at the age of 71. He was born January 1, 1939 in Mexico, to Jose Cruz and Martha Celia (Ramiriez) Jaimes. A devoted family man, Jose loved fishing and anything to do with horses. He enjoyed cooking with a passion, watching television and especially “western” movies. His parents; wife, Anastasia Maria Jaimes; and a great-granddaughter, Kayla Jaimes preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, John Albert Jaimes and wife, Winn of Kyle, and Michael Barrera of Mexico; daughters, Nery Jaimes of Kyle, and Maria L. Rux and husband, Paul of Houston; sister, Silvia Garza of Austin; grandson, John Abert Jaimes, Jr.; granddaughter, Jennifer L. Jaimes; one nephew and three nieces. Dora Garza White, 91, last surviving child of Peter and Cora Garza, passed away Friday, August 13, 2010 in San Marcos, Texas. She was born November 18, 1918 in San Marcos, Texas. She is preceded in death by her husband, Walter A. White; brothers, George Garza, John Garza, Edward Garza, Bonifacio Garza, Peter Garza and J.C. Garza; sister and husband, Lucia and Alfonso Contreras. She is survived by four sisters-in-law, Agnes Garza, Lydia Garza, Gloria Garza, and Joyce Garza; and many nieces and nephews. Dora was a lifetime resident of San Marcos. She was a 1938 graduate of San Marcos High School and attended Southwest Texas Teachers’ College. Dora was a devout Catholic and a lifelong member of St. John’s Catholic Church. She was employed by San Marcos Department Store for over 20 years and continued her career as a retail sales associate at J.C. Penney in San Marcos, where she retired after 30 years of service at the age of 83. After her retirement she enjoyed her leisure time with her family and pets. Vera Carmel Brown
Carmel Brown, 91 of Boerne passed away August 13, 2010 at Cibolo Creek Nursing Home. She was born May 18, 1919 in Batson, Texas Willie Almer and Minnie Alma (Vanya) Pinckard. Carmel spent most of her life in Mont Belvieu, Texas. She graduated from Barbers Hill High School where she met her husband, Delno of 73 years. Carmel loved sports. She played basketball and tennis in high school and continued playing tennis until she was 80. She enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren participate in various sports and spent many hours cheering them on and she attended as many of their events as she could. The role she took in the various ministries of the churches she attended was more than mere involvement, it was her life blood. The highlight of her later years was teaching The Encouragers Class at Westover Baptist Church. Carmel also enjoyed sewing , oil painting and quilting. Lt .Col. Jon K. Hovde, (U.S. Army, Ret.) of San Marcos, Texas, husband, father, friend, and mentor to many, passed away on Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at the age of 66. Jon was often described as a dear soul who inspired life in spite of his circumstances. He was born on August 14, 1943 in New Ulm, Minnesota, to Rolf and Fredrikka (Finnson) Hovde. Jon retired from the U.S. Army after a 25 year career. He has been a member of the First Lutheran Church since 1984. He enjoyed reading, especially the Bible, using his computer and listening to his CD’s, horseback riding in his younger days, dancing, coin collecting and tinkering with cars. Anthony Jerod Kelly, age 33, a native of Mansfield , LA , residing in San Marcos , TX , died August 4, 2010. He was born November 8, 1976, in Shreveport , LA , to Virginia Kelly and Matthew Fields. Anthony graduated from Mansfield High School in 1994. He served in the U.S. Army from 1999 to 2008. SSG Kelly was stationed at Fort Hood & Camp Carroll, Korea and served one tour of duty in Iraq . On October 18, 2008, he married Elise Lynette Franklin in San Marcos. In 2007, Anthony and Elise moved to San Marcos where he began working for The Beer Gas Company in 2008 until his passing. Virginia “Bitsy” Witte
Virginia “Bitsy” Cox Witte, 71, of San Marcos passed away August 5, 2010 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Virginia “Bitsy” was born October 13, 1938 in San Marcos, Texas. She attended Southwest Texas State University and graduated from Texas A & I University and went on to fulfill her dream of teaching for 31 years until retiring due to her illness. Virginia “Bitsy” Witte was not only the light of her family’s life, but was the thread that held us all together until that bond was woven tight enough to hold us together for life. She not only meant the world to her family, but also to her friends and every student who was lucky enough to pass through her classroom door. The City of San Marcos proclaimed May 5, 1998, “Virginia Witte Day”. She received the Heritage Association’s “Most Worthy Citizen Award for Education”; the “Principal’s Outstanding Educator Award”; and in 2006, the “San Marcos High School Distinguished Alumnae Award”. There are too many accomplishments to list them all but she was particularly proud of starting the first Boy Scouts of America Explorer Post and Academic Decathlon Team. Bitsy ...
