Joel B. Roberts

Joel B. Roberts of San Marcos, TX, passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at the age of 56.  He was born on July 6, 1960 to Joel V. and Janet (Watson) Roberts in San Marcos, TX. His greatest love and his greatest accomplishment was his son, Valen. He graduated from San Marcos High School in 1978.  He attended Southwest Texas State University, now called Texas State University.  He rodeoed  during High School, College and was a professional Bull Rider until 1992. Joel worked for the Texas State Treasury Department and was an adjuster for All State Insurance for 14 years. He is survived by his parents; his wife, Kelly Roberts; son, Valen Roberts of Austin, TX; stepdaughters, Kylie and Kyra of San Marcos, TX;  brother, Randy Roberts and wife, Carla of San Marcos, TX and their children, Reese and Sydney Roberts; sister, Tara Lantz and husband, Bret of San Marcos, TX and their children, Bret II and Brady Lantz. Debbie Haynes of San Marcos, TX, formerly of Russell, KS and Booker, TX, beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2017, at the age of 62.  She was born in Perryton, TX on May 19, 1954, to Delbert and Ruth (Frederick) Howard. She is survived by her parents, Delbert and Ruth Howard;  husband, Charles R. Haynes; two sons, Dr. Kevin H. Haynes of Los Angeles, CA, and Travis R. Haynes of Rockport, TX; daughter, Melanie K. Carlson and husband, Brian of Royce City, TX; two sisters, Diane Simmons and husband, Dennis of Wichita, KS and Denise Brown and husband, Ron of WaKeeney, KS; her two precious grandchildren, who were the light of her eyes, Aidan Charles and Logan James Carlson; as well as several nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Valen Dale Roberts of San Marcos, TX, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at the age of 77.  He was born February 23, 1939 in San Marcos, TX, to Valen Henry and Mildred Irene (Davidson) Roberts. His parents and his wife, Diane  preceded him in death. He is survived by brother, Joel V. Roberts; two nephews, Randy Roberts and Joel B. Roberts; and one niece, Tara Lantz all of San Marcos. Dale was a lifelong resident of San Marcos, graduating from San Marcos High School.  He worked at Texas State University for 25 years. Family will receive friends at Pennington Funeral Home, 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M., Monday, February 20, 2017.  A  Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at the San Marcos City Cemetery Tabernacle, with the Rev. Dean was born July 5, 1938 in Kendalia, TX to Virgil and Bernice (Kneupper) Gourley and died February 15, 2017 In San Marcos, TX. He was preceded in death by both his parents. He married his high school sweetheart, Leola (Kruckemeyer) Gourley in Blanco on June 21, 1957. He was raised in Kendalia, moved to Blanco in the 3rd grade, mechanic’d for Horace Barker at Barker Motors in Blanco. After moving to San Marcos in 1957, he and Leola bought their long-time home where they raised their family. He worked at Jack Hughes Motors as a mechanic before the construction career in road construction. He was employed by RB Bowden Construction, Hays County Gravel, Cen-Tex Materials and 4G Materials. He is survived by his wife Leola, son David Dean Gourley, daughter-in-law Becky Bray, daughter Cindy Gourley-Martin and son-in-law Collins Martin, grandchildren, Dustin Bray (Jennifer), Payden Price, Spencer Gourley, and Laura Price, and new great-grandbabies Dillon and Caroline Bray. Ronnie F. “Ron” Knott of New Braunfels, TX, beloved husband, father, grand-and great grandfather, brother and friend passed away in San Marcos, TX, on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at the age of 74, surrounded by family.  He was born in Childress, TX on April 26, 1942, the son of Fordy and Mollie (Lee) Knott. His parents and a sister, Wanda Elizabeth McBee preceded him in death. He is survived by his devoted wife of almost  35 years, Joyce Ann “Jan” (Berry) Knott; sister, Florene Ritz (Jim) of Frisco, TX; two brothers, Leeroy Knott (Mary) of Naples, SC and Ernie Dwight Knott (Hazel) of Wagaman, LA; five daughters, Ronetta Sawatzki  of Richland Hills, TX, Ruth Molina (George) of San Marcos, TX, Stacy Post (Darrell) of San Antonio, TX, Jana Tuerff (Brian) of Austin,, TX, and Derwalea King (Richard) of Cedar Creek, TX.  He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. James Wilburn Ragsdale

James Wilburn Ragsdale (a “BISM”) was born in San Marcos September 4th, 1920.  Wilburn was a descendant of five of the Barons that signed the Magna Charter in 1215.  He was a sixth generation Texan.  His great, great, great grandfather was one of the original 300 land grant recipients and his great, great, grandfather was a Doctor at the Battle of San Jacinto.  He died February 6th, 2017 at the age of 96.  Wilburn graduated from San Marcos High School and SWTSC.  He joined the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II and served in China.  After a long career with Avis Rent A Car he taught school.  When he retired he moved back to San Marcos to care for his mother and open an Antique shop. Wilburn was preceded in death by his father and mother-George, Sr. and Jamie Ragsdale, 3 brothers-J. Edwin Smith, J.   John Jay Trumbull, 68, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 10th, 2017, in San Marcos, Texas, surrounded by family. John was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on May 15th, 1948 to Roy Trumbull and Ada Caldwell. He graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls in 1966.  John married his beloved wife of forty-five years, Judy Lee, in 1971. John proudly served in the Air Force for eight years, owned and operated Trumbull Digging Service in South Dakota with his brother, Roger, and, after moving to Texas in 1980, had a distinguished career with the U.S. Postal Service. John was a hard-working, loving father and husband, who enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid bowler, and competed in many tournaments in his lifetime. He will be dearly missed by friends and family, and forever in our hearts. Alan “Pat” Greenwood

Alan “Pat” Greenwood, 77, of San Marcos, TX, died February 11, 2017.  The son of now deceased James A. Greenwood and Henrietta Greenwood of Illinois, he was fondly loved by his wife, Jean, daughter, Tricia Stringer, three grandchildren, and many other family members. Pat spent 25 years in the US Army as a photographer and then continued to work for the US government until his retirement in 2005. Pat loved telling others about the joy he found in Jesus. As the “missions guy” for Westover Baptist Church, he devoted his time in recent years to sharing with his church family what God is doing throughout the world. Many people have been blessed through his life. His support of and encouragement to missionaries will continue to bless many others for years to come. Robert "Sonny" Clinton Cockrill  went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, February 5, 2017. Robert Clinton Cockrill, born October 1, 1933, was the youngest of ten children born to Lemuel and Beatrice Cockrill; sharecroppers on the Chapman Ranch in South Texas.  By age two, both parents had passed and he and his siblings were taken in by relatives.  Robert, or Sonny as he was called, did not grow up with his 9 surviving brothers and sisters. He was raised by Lucille (Lemuel’s sister) and Yewell Sights.  Yewell worked in the oil field and traveled the country following work, but eventually ended up back in Texas.  There, Sonny spent time on Uncle John B. Cockrill’s  peanut and watermelon farm.  He attended school in Kingsbury through eighth grade, and graduated from Freer High School. He enlisted in the Navy in 1951 at age 17.  He requested duty on a ship and he got it.  After basic training, he was assigned to the USS Marsh; a destroyer escort.  His first tour among many assignments was to Honolulu and made numerous stops at Midway Island.  Each duty station lasted nine months to a ...

Elizabeth J. (Betty) Richards (Wisner)

Elizabeth J. (Betty) Richards (Wisner) died in San Marcos, Texas on February 5, 2017.  Betty was born to Margaret and Fitz Wisner in Bozeman, Montana on May 28, 1931. While growing up, she lived and attended elementary schools at various mining camps in Montana where her father worked as a journeyman carpenter.  She attended high school for two years in Deer Lodge, Montana and two years in Bozeman, Montana where she graduated in 1950.  After high school, she studied and practiced X-ray technology at the Great Falls, Montana Deaconess Hospital.  In Great Falls she met and  married Merwin Richards, an Air Force officer stationed at Malmstrom AFB.  She and Merwin spent 30-odd years in the service, living in a number of places in the U.S. and overseas including Stuttgart, Germany and Naples, Italy.  Betty had an enduring interest in and love of people, and so, enjoyed immensely the service-spouse life where she met a plethora of individuals of different backgrounds and interests.  After retirement, she and Merwin moved to San Marcos, Texas where they lived for 31 years.  Betty was an accomplished oil-painting artist and applied her talents during all of her adult life, leaving a legacy of beautiful oil paintings ...

Mary Patricia (Pat) Bird Raney of San Marcos, TX, passed away with a change of residence, on February 5, 2017. She was born March 16, 1934, in Gonzales, TX to Arthur and Virginia (Hicks) Bird. She graduated from Gonzales High School in May 1952 and received  a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education, minor in Music, 1955.  She later earned her Master’s in Education at Texas State University. Pat met her beloved husband, Airman Nolan Eugene (Gene) Raney, during her last semester at Texas State University, San Marcos.  They enjoyed 57 years of marriage and had three daughters, eight grandsons, and four great-grandchildren. As a teacher, she taught in numerous school districts and retired from Dripping Springs. She was a special education teacher and loved her students as her own. She was active in the Baptist church her entire life.  She served as a pianist, an organist, a Sunday School teacher for adults with special needs, and a Sunday School teacher for international students.  She and Gene were both involved in Lay Renewal Ministries for many years.  The most important decision of Pat’s life was asking Jesus to be her personal Lord ...

Nell Ferrell Linebarger, 91, was born at home in Kingsbury, Texas, on February 11, 1925, and died at home in Staples, Texas, on February 3, 2017, a week shy of her 92nd birthday. A child of the depression, she was reared by a single mom in a day when a good job for a woman in Kingsbury, a railroad town located between Seguin and Luling,  was working in the school cafeteria. Times were tough but she remembered them fondly. She enjoyed reminiscing about her grandfather arriving in his Model T to take her and her four siblings to the farm on weekends, then returning to Kingsbury on Sunday night with fresh milk, eggs and butter to both sell and keep the kids fed during the following week. The Sweetheart of Kingsbury High, 1942, Eva Nell dropped out of school to marry Roger Derham Linebarger, the love of her life, on May 21, 1942. Wesley Paul Medley, age 72, affectionately known as “Papa” , passed away at home in Staples, TX, on February 2, 2017,  with his family by his side.  He was born May 23, 1944, in Mountainair, NM to Joseph and Beatrice (Garrison) Medley. He is survived by his devoted wife, Julia (Duggins) Medley.  They were married in Belen, NM on November 9, 1968. He is also survived by his son, Shawn Medley of Pigeon Forge, TN and his children, Jacob and Bailey Medley;  son, Kirk Medley (Annas) of Wimberley, TX and their children, Colton and Kamryn Medley; daughter, Twanna Person (Gus Person, III) of Seguin, TX and their children, Gus (IV) and Taylor Person; brother, Steve Medley (Zelta) of Colorado; and sister, Debbie Wallace (Steve) of NM. His parents and one brother, Mike Medley preceded him in death. Catalina Chagoya Eureste passed away peacefully on January 29, 2017. She was born to the late Jose and Inez Chagoya on March 25, 1928. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Escolastico Eureste, Jr. and her brothers, Consuelo, Guadalupe and Gabriel Chagoya and sisters, Jesusa Chagoya Facundo, Antonia Chagoya Facundo. She was an amazing lady who loved to sew. Catalina  or “Cata” as she was known to most of her friends, was an excellent seamstress.  Her giving and loving spirit was admired by many.  She was very active with her church and was very dedicated to her Catholic faith.  Family and friends loved her cooking especially her tamales and tortillas. To Catalina, her family was most important. She had such a positive impact on so many lives and will be tremendously missed.  She appreciated the abundance of her friendships and the love she received.
