Beverly Jane Oram Wood, 73, of San Marcos, went to be with her savior on January 9, 2012. Services have been entrusted to the care of Pennington Funeral Home and will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 2:00 at the First Baptist Church of San Marcos.

Beverly Wood was born to Catherine Charysh and John Oram on May 2, 1938 in Chicago, IL. She grew up and attended schools in Chicago. After graduating high school, she attended a local beauty academy. In the late 1950’s, she met James Wood, a soldier from Waurika, OK at a USO event in Chicago. James and Beverly married and began a marriage that would take them from Chicago to Florida and from Frankfurt to El Paso. Their marriage lasted 18 years and gave them 4 wonderful children: Diana, Donna, Dina, and James.

Following James’ discharge from the US Army, the family settled in Vernon, TX. Beverly worked for several years as the Activities Director for the Wood Nursing and Convalescent Center, which her family owned. In 1978, Beverly relocated to Chillicothe, TX and began working at the State Hospital in Vernon, TX. In 1989, she moved to San Marcos, TX and accepted a position with the State Hospital of San Marcos and in 1993 a position at the Schieb Mental Health Center. In 2002, Beverly “retired” from the healthcare field, only to return a short time later as a hospice volunteer for Central Texas Medical Center, and an auxiliary volunteer for both Central Texas Medical Center and Seton Hospital in Hays County.

When she was not volunteering her time, Beverly could be found at her home reading a western, romance, or Tom Clancy novel or listening to tapes of Ray Stephens and John Anderson, who’s she jokingly referred to as her “sugar daddy,” and whose pictures were spread throughout her home. She was a member of the Methodist Church of Kyle, TX, the Emmaus Methodist Group, the United Women’s Organization through the United Methodist Church, the Red Hat Society and the group leader for the ‘Chick Flick‘s at the LaVista apartments where most of her friends knew her as ‘Woody’. Beverly was the ultimate arts and crafts expert. She always had several projects going at the same time. She enjoyed puff painting and making elaborate wreaths to give to her family and friends.

Beverly Wood was a caring and giving woman who had a passion for life. She was confidently independent and never lost her feisty Chicago spirit. She was extremely intelligent and opinionated and never failed to put others needs before hers. She was a loving mother, a caring sister, a proud grandmother, a dedicated employee and volunteer, and a loyal friend. She will be missed by all who were lucky enough to share their lives with her, but her legacy will live on through the love and kindness of her family and friends whose lives she has undoubtedly touched.

She is survived by her four children: Diana Hendrix and her husband Chuck, of Edmond, OK. Donna Thomson and her husband Blair, of San Marcos, TX. Dina Trew and her husband Grady, of Bastrop, TX and James Wood Jr. and his wife Katrina, of Wichita Falls, TX.

Three Brothers: Bill Oram, Butch Oram, and John Oram. Thirteen grandchildren: Nicole, Valarie and Clayton, Skye, Tess and Cole, Taylor and Ryan, Bjay, Emily, Sarah, Kaila and Gavin Blair. She is also survived by three great grandchildren with another to be born very soon.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the St Jude’s Children’s hospital, Beverly’s favorite charity.
