Wigginton and grandson, Fred David Wigginton II and all of her siblings, brothers Archie, Willie, Otha, Bun, Sam, Clyde, A.B., Buddy and Roy, sisters Clara, Nola, Gladine, Lottie Faye and Lena Mae. Joy is survived by son Fred and his wife Karen of Canyon Lake, Texas, grandchildren Emily Wigginton of San Marcos, Texas and Jason Wigginton of College Station, Texas and a host of nieces and nephews. She was a Joy to all her family and friends with her beautiful smile, her unending love, and her profound devotion to her Lord through her commitment to the Baptist church. We will miss you, MaMa, but will always be surrounded by your love. We want to thank Hope Hospice of New Braunfels for their many months of caring and support.

Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, May 16, 2013, at the Martindale Cemetery, with the Rev. Jerry Bullock officiating.

On the morning of April 16, 2013, Al Lowman, a life-long lover of learning closed the cover of his final book and shortly thereafter the lid of his casket was closed with equal finality. Lowman entered this world on Ground Hog Day in 1935, the middle of three children born to Grace and Fred Lowman, whose farm was three miles south of Violet on the road to Petronila. He was born at Fred Roberts Hospital in Corpus Christi. At the age of nine he decided to accompany his parents with the move to San Marcos.

His home was just outside of San Marcos in historic Stringtown where he moved with his parents in 1944. He lived in the same house for over sixty-five years before moving to a new home in the back part of the family property in 2009. He received his education in the San Marcos public schools, attended SWTSTC (now Texas State University) and graduated from UT Austin with a BA in 1957 and MA in 1962. He always enjoyed the company of his children and grandsons who survive him. He and Darlyne were the parents of a son, Todd, of San Marcos and a daughter, Cathy, of Cedar Park. She and her husband, Rob Northcutt, are the parents of three sons, Grayson, Keller and Griffin Northcutt. He met Darlyne in a bookstore. He loved saying she was the most expensive bookstore acquisition and his most cherished first edition. She shared his interest through almost 46 years of marriage. She survives him.

Besides his wife, children and grandchildren, he is also survived by his sister, Mellie Nicholas and her husband Bill of San Marcos, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Evelyn Rossow of Fredericksburg, two nephews, six nieces and a host of cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Grace Lowman and brother, Ted Lowman. His final illness was diagnosed as PSP (progressive supranuclear palsy).

His community involvement included service on the Hays County Historical Commission where he served throughout much of the 1990s and membership in the Heritage Association of San Marcos. While serving on the HCHC he wrote the text for and was instrumental in putting markers along the Camino Real in Hays County. Later he led the financial drive to put Jason Scull’s sculpture of Jack Hays on the Courthouse lawn. He served two non-consecutive terms on the board of the Central Texas Higher Education Authority. He was a longtime member of the San Marcos League of Women Voters and also served a term as their president. Al also served on the Texas Committee on the Humanities from 1971 to 1975.

He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church where he served intermittently on the administrative board and was a charter member of his Sunday School class which he attended for over 50 years and helped with the teaching duties. He wrote a church history when the congregation celebrated its 125th anniversary and before his illness was diagnosed, he was working on revising and updating that history.

Al was a book collector for over fifty years and he had a library in his backyard housing his collection. His appetite for collecting and his eclectic tastes were quite insatiable. Besides his interests in books, he was also a lover of music, particularly classical music, jazz, as well as bluegrass. He owned an extensive CD collection and enjoyed attending operas.

Though his degrees were in government and economics, he spent his career in the Texas history field, the last 21 years working at the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio coordinating their special exhibits and writing the catalogs that went along with the exhibits. He commuted to jobs in San Antonio and Austin for 35 years and once said if he ever wrote an autobiography, he would call it “35 Years on Interstate 35.”

Al was particularly proud of his membership in the Philosophical Society of Texas and being a fellow and life member of the Texas State Historical Association. He served as president of TSHA in 2000-2001, president of the Texas Folklore Society in 1990-91 where he learned never to let facts get in the way of a good story. In the interregnum he served as president of the Book Club of Texas (1992-94). In the TSHA he quickly learned that the easiest way to make history was to write it. He was active in numerous historical organizations. He was also a member of the Grolier Club of New York City, which is the world’s oldest organization for book collectors.

Al published many articles and book reviews in Texas journals. His published books include: Printer At the Pass, A Bibliography of Carl Hertzog and Printing Arts in Texas, which Johnny Jenkins listed as one of the basic Texas books. His Printing Arts Collection was acquired by Texas A&M University in 2004 and is housed in the Cushing Library on that campus.

He spoke to many groups around the state in El Paso, Houston, Midland, Kerrville, College Station, San Antonio, Jefferson, Fredericksburg and Abilene where Darlyne sat dutifully in audiences hearing some of the same stories repeatedly.

Al also had an interest in politics and back in the 1970s and 80s was proud to serve as Democratic precinct chairman of the South Stringtown/Centerpoint/York Creek metroplex and outlying areas. He kept up with local, state and national politics. He served over 20 years in the Texas National Guard and an additional 10 years in the Army Reserve where he retired as a Lt. Colonel. He always said that this made him the “rankest” member of his family for all time.

In a university town where it is considered de rigueur to be some sort of activist, Al settled for being a sedentary lifestyle activist.

His family is honoring his wish to have a graveside service. It will be held at the San Marcos Cemetery on Saturday, April 20th at 3:30 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Dr. Jenna Heart. His life’s motto was “give me levity, or give me death.” Memorial contributions may be made to the Foundation of FUMC, 129 W. Hutchison, San Marcos, Texas 78666.

(Written by Al Lowman)

Jaimy is survived by his parents, Ted and Frances Breihan, brother Stacy Breihan and his wife Michele, sister Erin Breihan-Pellien and her husband Corky.

Also surviving are many caring aunts and uncles as well as very caring nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Jaimy was a beautiful, talented, compassionate, and articulate son, of whom his family is very proud.

He had become a leader in the electrical field with new buildings and new technologies related to new construction.

Jaimy wrote beautiful poetry, loved Mother Earth and the gifts she so bountifully gave to him and us to protect and cherish.

His gentle spirit and love of family has been such a wonderful blessing and legacy befitting a faithful son.

Jaimy was well-read and had the insight of a visionary.

His circle of friends widened throughout this community he so dearly loved. This led to his earnest endeavor to save it from ill-placed development.

He remarked that he felt that “the Sessom Creek Neighborhood Association could do their very best to make this a community showcase of what a strong, gifted, articulate neighborhood can do to enhance its quality of life.”

“Protecting our neighborhoods, watersheds, and our rivers are noble causes. Progress is slow sometimes, even though dedicated souls are working in many different areas to accomplish a common goal.

Jaimy loved his church, First United Methodist at which his service will be conducted. It had become his power source.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm on Friday evening, April 19, 2013 at Pennington Funeral Home.

Memorial services for Jaimy will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 1:30 pm. The church is located at 129 W. Hutchison, San Marcos, Texas.
