Pennington Funeral Home recently celebrated 110 years of service to the residents of San Marcos. In 1897, A.B. Rogers established A.B. Rogers Furniture and Coffins in the Simon Building on Hopkins Street. In 1907, the business was renamed Undertakers and Furniture Store and moved to the building on the corner of Hopkins Street and LBJ Drive.
Rogers hired Willard A. Pennington in the early 1930′s. He became a permanent employee and married Edra Collier, the furniture store bookkeeper. Willard and Edra purchased the funeral home in early 1943, changing the name to Rogers-Pennington Funeral Home; five years later, the name was changed to Pennington Funeral Home. In 1956, Pennington Funeral Home moved to its present location at 323 North Comanche. In 1957,
Willard Pennington was killed in an auto accident on the Wimberley Highway, leaving Edra, a licensed Funeral Director and mother of three, to manage the family business.
In 1961, Willard and Edra’s son, Bill Pennington joined the firm as a Funeral Director/Embalmer. He married a local girl, Linda Kyle in 1963 and they had two children, Collier Pennington and Kristin Pennington. Bill Pennington bought the business from his Mother in 1971. Kristin Pennington after graduating from Texas A&M University, attended Commonwealth College, graduating in 1998 joining her parents as a Funeral Director and pre-need counselor in 1998. Kristin is the third generation of Pennington’s to carry on the tradition and work at the funeral home.
Pennington Funeral Home is one of the oldest Burial Companies with their membership to the National Burial Association since 1903. Pennington Funeral Home’s pre-need trust permit is #42 (there are over 2000 permits today).
Now, over 110 years and three generations later, Pennington Funeral Home is still a family business.
