Dorothy Mae Miles of Prairie Lea, Texas, passed away on May 16, 2012, at the age of 77. She was born on February 22, 1935, to Frank and Lizzie Mae Shaw Green. Dorothy was a caring mother and grandmother who grew up in Prairie Lea. She devoted her time to her family. She also loved to fish, read and play bingo. She is preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Milton, Elmo, Johnny and R.C. Green and three sisters, Willie Lea Warren, Lizzie Mae Tealer, Ella Mae Warren and Nora Hardaway. She is survived by her son, Johnny Green of Federal Way, Washington;  one brother, Frank Green of Prairie Lea, Texas; two sisters, Bessie Lee McVea of Prairie Lea, Texas and Mabel Hardaway of Gonzales, Texas; one grandchild, Johnny Jr. Family will receive friends at McCurdy Funeral Home, at 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Friday, May 18, 2012. Evelyn Patricia Lawrence

Evelyn Patricia Lawrence, 97, passed away on May 14, 2012 in Lockhart, Texas. She will be greatly missed by many relatives and friends throughout Texas and beyond. Evelyn was born in Port Arthur, Texas on August 6, 1914, to Richard and Jossie Hamilton, originally of Corsicana. Evelyn had two sisters, Ruth and Vivian. Their father was killed by gangsters during prohibition in 1920 when Evelyn was six. She was educated in Port Arthur and Toledo, Ohio, where her mother and step-father, Frank Schnautz, moved when she was a teenager. She married Milton Carroll Lawrence in 1941 in Texas at the age of 26, and had two children, Sheila Ruth Lawrence Goss and Michael Patrick Lawrence. Although she sold real estate and taught piano during her married life, she was primarily a homemaker until her husband’s death in 1964. At that time, she returned to work fulltime in a variety of positions, culminating at Houston’s Texas Medical Center in the Texas Children’s Hospital and the Texas Heart Institute. She helped heart surgeon Denton Cooley launch the Journal of the Texas Heart Institute and was its first managing editor. Jose M. Baltierra

Jose M.”Dee” Baltierra, 74 of Lockhart went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 13, 2012 after his battle with multiple Myeloma. He was born on November 13, 1937, in Fentress, TX, to Samuel and Gumercinda Munoz Baltierra. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Margie Valdez. He is survived by his siblings, Refugio Baltierra, Tomas Baltierra, Victor Baltierra, Juan Baltierra and Concepcion “Concha” Juarez; his children, Edward Baltierra, Virginia Baltierra and Dolores Walczak and two step-daughters, Cathy and Irene Tobias; he was blessed with 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Jose was a devoted father and grandfather enormously loved by all. He was known by his positive attitude and the encouraging words, “NEVER GIVE UP.” He will be greatly missed. Barbara Jean Rohman of Lockhart, Texas, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Chisolm Trail Nursing Home on May 3, 2012, at the age of 83. She was born on February 10, 1929, in Cumberland, Maryland, to Edward W. and Reba Rohman. Jean served and was Honorably Discharged from the Air Force. She then lived in Lockhart and remained here until her death. Jean was kindhearted towards people and especially towards her cats. They were the best cared for pets in Lockhart. Memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, May 17, 2012, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lockhart, with the Rev. Alberto Borruel officiating. Finis L. Faulkner, Sr., career U.S. Army officer and Educator, from Harker Heights, TX passed away peacefully on April 8, 2012 at the age of 89. Finis, who was known to his family and friends as Bob, was born September 17, 1922 to Ellma and Wade Faulconer in Arkansas. He enlisted in the Army on August 13, 1940 and began a long successful career in the Army. His career took him to Ft Ord, CA and then on the England, North Africa, Sicily and Italy during World War II. After the war he was stationed at Fort Lewis Washington and Fort Belvoir, VA. He then went to Austin, TX where he taught ROTC at the University of Texas. He met Florice Rountree from the Creedmoor- Austin area and they were married in Jan of 1948. Florice already had four daughters and three of them lived with them and he was a loving father to all of them for many years plus he and Florice had four more cherished children of their own. Ruth Erma Osteen was born November 28, 1912 in Ocala, Florida. She feel asleep in death April 7, 2012 in Dripping Springs, Texas at the age of 99. She lived her last 70 years in Texas, and she now awaits her resurrection when our Lord Jesus returns to this earth to reestablish His Kingdom. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends during her final days. Ruth was well known by her devoted faith in God. She began each day by reading God’s word and she would speak continually of her faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Arthur Osteen, her father, Frank John Beardslee, her mother, Jessie Viola Halsey, two sisters, three brothers, and her son, Robert Lovejoy. Solora Justine Riemenschneider, lifelong resident of Lockhart, Texas, passed away on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at the age of 87. She was born on September 13, 1924, in Red Rock, Texas, to Charles Elexander and Mary Ethyl (Smith) James. Solora was a caring mother, grandmother, sister. An avid gardener, she loved her flowers. She also loved her music, Gospel, Old Crooners and Frank Sinatra. Solora was a drum major during her High School years. She married William Victor Riemenschneider on July 05, 1955. Her parents; husband; two sisters, Lorene Hamblin and Charlene Baker preceded her in death.  She is survived by three sons, Austin T. Martin L. Krzywosinski, 78, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 23, 2012, surrounded by those who loved him.  He was born on August 15, 1933, in Lockhart, Texas, to John and Stephanie Bonkowski Krzywosinski and grew up in San Antonio where he graduated from Central Catholic High School, Class of ’51.   He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean Conflict.  He was employed in Civil Service at Kelly AFB from 1955 until his retirement in 1989. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Veronica Little.  He is survived by the love of his life, Scelia Adams; brother Leonard Krzywosinski and his wife Mary, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Wednesday, March 28th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lockhart, with a Holy Rosary beginning at 10:00 AM followed by the funeral mass.  Burial will follow at Polonia Catholic Cemetery. Leland Owen

Leland Owen was born on March 31, 1914 in McMahan, Texas, at home.  He passed from this life on March 23, 2012, in Lockhart, Texas.  His father was Odus Owen and mother was Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” Handley Owen.  He is survived by one brother, Curtis Owen and wife Edith Owen of McMahan, Texas and a host of nieces and nephews and friends.  He was married to Alta Mae “Peggy” Jowers on October 28, 1937 in Luling, Texas, and lived several years on the family farm at McMahan.  Peggy preceded him in death on December 5, 1976.  They had no children. He spent the next several years of his married life working on the Luling Foundation Farm in  Luling;  running a locker plant in Lockhart and also in Bishop, Texas.  He then got a job at Celanese Chemical Plant in Bishop and later moved to their new plant in Bay City, Texas, where he finished up 30 years for the company.  After he retired, he moved back to the old home place where he was born.  The last five years of his life were spent in the Parkview Nursing Center ...

Paul Howington, age 92, of Niederwald, Texas passed away, Thursday March 8, 2012. He was born June 27, 1919 in Abilene, Texas. He was the 10th son of Joseph and Alice Howington of Abilene. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII, as a radio operator on a destroyer off the coast of Japan. After his tour with the Navy Paul worked for Texas Utilities and retired from there. He moved to Niederwald so his wife could be closer to her son 1978. From 1978 on he was a long time member of First Lockhart Baptist Church where he formed many lasting relationships. He was married to Verba Lee “Dee” Howington for 30 years who preceded him in death in 2001. He is survived by son, Jan Howington and wife, Charlene of Colorado, step-son, Richard Lee Bible and wife, Joyce of Niederwald. He leaves behind 6 grand-children; 5 great grand-children; and 2 great- great grand- children along with several nieces and nephews. LaNelle Carter Gabriel, of Lockhart, passed on to be with the Lord on March 10, 2012.   She was born at home in Lytton Springs on October 26, 1924 to Horace Brinkley Carter and Jewell Edith Hogan Carter, both of original Pioneer families of Caldwell County. She resided since November of 2009 at 1017 Bois D'Arc in Lockhart, where she lived a deeply contented and meaningful life. She is survived by her only son, John David Gabriel, M.D., of Dallas and Austin; three wonderful grandchildren, Kirsten Elise, John Taylor, and Mackenzie Meredith; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families, Mildred Marie (Missy) Daly, Carter Wayne Pettit, Mary Nell Gorom, Jay Dalton, Joan Marie (Joni) Gabriel, Tally Gabriel, and Ernie Gabriel. She was preceded in death by John Pierce Gabriel, her beloved husband of fifty-three years, and by her five sisters, Mildred, Marie, Blanche, her twin sister La Nier, and Yvonne. She was Valedictorian of her high school class, and in her address aspired for us to "Hitch your wagon to a star," from the essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Joe Fischer Jr.

Joe Fischer Jr.  August 18, 1923 - March 2, 2012 Husband, father, grandfather, and patriot.  Joe was born in the Elm Grove farming community in 1923 and graduated from Elm Grove Community School.  Joe enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served in North Africa, participated in the invasion of Sicily, and then in the Normandy invasion.  He fought in a Sherman Tank named "Brooks" until the end of the war then returned home and married his long time sweetheart Natalene McKean on July 8, 1946. Joe was a professional firefighter with the Ft Sam Houston Fire Department; injured in the line of duty he retired in 1975.  He was a loving husband, caring father, grandfather, and great grandfather and a role model for everyone who knew him.  Joe was a member of the First Lockhart Baptist Church and the American Legion.  He led by example, he always kept his word, worked hard, and never had a bad word for anyone, unless the Astros or Cowboys lost.  His memory will be cherished, and his family will miss him greatly.  Pictured is Joe and his wife of 65 years. Our Dad was a good man. “He’s a good man” is something one man says to another when he wants to let you know that this is a solid person you can trust. He’s good at his job. You can count on him. He’s a straight shooter. This was our Dad. Wallace Eldon Embrey was a devoted husband to Dorothy Embrey for 48 consecutive years. As he passed into the dimming tunnel of Alzheimer’s, some of the most poignant words we heard were, “Do you know Dorothy?  She is the most wonderful person you could ever meet.” Sometimes he spoke these words to his wife Dorothy and sometimes to his children, Larry, Abbe and Curtis Embrey. We also heard stories of their courtship as it was happening. Stories we had never heard before.  Stories of their first date, and dances and describing how pretty and amazing she is…. “You just have to meet her.” He was a gamer. A club champion golfer, fierce competitor who enjoyed gambling and playing the stock market. These passions finished second only to his family.
