Dorothy Joyce Taylor

Dorothy Joyce Vestal was born the “cotton-topped daughter” of Alice Louella (Norman) Vestal and William Reagan Vestal on Nov. 14, 1929, in the Hays Community in Cooke County, Texas. She entered into her Father’s Kingdom on Sunday, July 27, 2014, in Lockhart, Texas. A lifelong teacher and artist, Dorothy married James Billy Taylor on Aug. 23, 1952. The couple lived in Huntsville while James earned both undergraduate and master’s degrees in Agriculture. It was there that their first son, David, was born. Later, the family moved to the Rio Grande Valley, where Dorothy attended Pan Am University, taught third grade for several years. During this time, Roger Mark, Bradly and Alice Taylor were born. As her four children grew, Dorothy traveled with them in the summers; taking them to Gainesville with her while she pursued her master’s degree from the University of North Texas. In 1972, the family moved to Lockhart, where Dorothy continued to teach, becoming a beloved elementary school teacher until her retirement in 1995. An active, longtime member of the First Lockhart Baptist Church, Dorothy never let retirement slow her down, instead choosing to share her life, and the lives of her friends, through two popular columns in the Lockhart Post-Register, ...

Celsa Rodriguez, 69, of Lockhart went to be with our Heavenly Father on July 24, 2014. She   was born on April 18, 1945 in Lockhart, Texas to Ascencion and Josefa Mojica Rodriguez. Celsa was a loving wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She was devoted to her family and loved to cook for them. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Lorenzo “Boogie” Cano; and two sisters, Crispina Herrera and Guadalupe Ancira. She is survived by her husband, Jesus Celestino Gonzales; one daughter, Connie Amaya; three sons, Julian Cano, Jr., Joe R. Otila S. Garza, 88, of Lockhart formally of Alice, Texas passed away on July 18, 2014. She   was born on October 5, 1925 in Alice, Texas to Isidoro and Luisa Garza. Otila was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother to her family. She was devoted to her family and was avid to her gardening. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers; her sisters and son, Frank Canales. She is survived by her son, Juan Jose Garza from Andrews, Texas; her daughter, Cynthia H. Lopez from Dale, Texas; her sister, Maria Antonia Garza of Belton, Texas; eleven grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. He had a love for music and his video games. William “Bill” Alex, 77, of Lockhart, Texas, passed away on July 4, 2014. He was born on April 5, 1937 in Luling, Texas to Henry C. and Gertrude Schreiber Alex. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Alice Alex and Imelda Bailey; and his brother-in-law, Milton Pfefferkorn. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Annie Mae Thompson Alex; two sons, Sammy Ernest Alex and wife, Peggy and William Henry Alex and wife, Cindy; two daughters, Leslie Ann Lee and Billie Ann Loep and husband, Jack; one brother, Melvin H. LaVerne Voigt, 93, of Houston, Texas, formally of Lockhart, passed away on July 2, 2014. She was born on April 23, 1921 in Rockdale, Texas to John and Lottie Yoakum Pruett. She was a resident of Caldwell County for 50 years and was the secretary for the Caldwell County Extension Office for 24 years. She moved to Houston 3 years ago to be closer to her family. She was a member of the Woodland Hills Church of Christ in Conroe, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Voigt who passed away in 1966. She is survived by her daughter, Judy Holt and husband, Randy of Houston, Texas; one sister, Evelyn Romoser of Houston; two grandchildren, Lacey Holt and Kelsy Holt. Chester Harris

Chester Harris

Chester was born in Dale, Texas, to Jake and Jimmie Ellen Pittman Harris. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Hershell Harris, and sister Loma Mullins; one surviving sister, Selma Roberts. He finished school by the 10th grade in Dale doing old jobs at a gas station, the cotton gin, and raising turkeys to sell until he volunteered for the Army Air Corp in 1942. He worked on P-39 air-craft. He married Helen Meta Fahrig on Dec 31, 1943, and was discharged from the service in 1945 returning to Lockhart to work at Lockhart Implement Company until he retired in 1986. He was a real mechanic and shop foreman that worked on Lincoln Continentals and farm tractors in the same shop. He liked raising cattle on the family farm. He is survived by his wife, Helen; son Danny Harris and wife Marty; his daughter Diane Rodgers and husband Vance; grandchildren Michael Rodgers, Kathy Willette, Mary Forester, and Jason Harris; eight great grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Norma Harris Taylor; two step-sons, Clay Boyd (Ruth) of Austin and Jo Boyd (Nancy) of Granbury; two step-daughters, Toni Mosier (Gary) of Fredericksburg and Lorraine Wheeler (Ronnie) of Odessa; his brother, Roy Taylor (Bonnie) of Lawrence, Kansas; his sister, Genevive Ormand of Austin; thirteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Fred Harris Blundell

  Fred Blundell, a lifelong resident of Lockhart, passed away on June 20 after a short illness. He was born on September 10, 1930 in Caldwell County, TX.  He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Norma; his sons Robert and Richard Blundell; step daughters Donna Stephens and Paula Hodges; grandchildren Paul Stephens, Leigh Anne Newcomer, Allie Hodges, Natalie Hodges, and Roxanne Blundell, as well as numerous friends and other family members. Fred will also be missed by his cat family "Bear' and "Goldie" that he cherished greatly. Fred graduated from Lockhart HS in 1949 and received a four-year scholarship to play football at what was then Sam Houston State Teachers College. Despite arriving at the Huntsville campus as a 163 pound freshman, he went on to start as a Center all four years of his collegiate playing career. He graduated from Sam Houston with a bachelor's degree and began his career as a school teacher and track/football coach. He later earned his master's degree in education as well.   Pete J. Bonkowski, age 99, died Friday May 30, 2014 at the Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lockhart Texas. Pete was born in Lockhart, Texas on March 30, 1915, to John Bonkowski and Rosa Dziernowski. He attended school in Mendoza and Lytton Springs, Texas. He was a farmer all of his adult life and was a down to earth, you get what you see, unpretensive individual who enjoyed living an uncomplicated life. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lockhart where he was a member of the Holy Name Society, was an usher, and for many years a faithful caretaker of the Polonia Cemetery. He was the principal caregiver to his mother and father and his sister, Geneva, in their later life. Prior to WWII he served in the Army National Guard unit in Lockhart. He also served in the US Navy aboard the USS Elusive in the southwest Pacific during the WWII era. He was predeceased by his mother and father, two brothers and six sisters. Dorothy Endres-Matthies, 85, of Red Rock, Texas went to be with The Lord Sunday May 25, 2014.  Dottie was born in Buffalo, New York, January 16, 1929.  She moved to Orlando, Florida in 1968 and worked at Sun Trust bank until her retirement. After an extended illness Dorothy moved to Red Rock Texas to live with her daughter, Mary Boaz last November and loved her new Texas home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. Matthies (Bud). She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen, her son, Edward Joseph, her daughter, Mary Boaz, her son, Scott Andrew, and her son Christien and grandchildren, Scott Andrew Jr, Charity Boaz, Kayla Boaz, Megan Matthies, Michael Riley, Janelle Wicker, and Jacob Boaz.
