Clendon LaVon Culpepper

Clendon LaVon Culpepper, 59, of Henderson, Texas went on to be with the Lord on July 20, 2017. LaVon was born February 4, 1958 in Freeport, Texas. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a member of Brazoria Kennel Club.  He was an officer with the Lockhart Police Department for 3 years and the Caldwell County Sheriff Office for another 3 years. He was a member of Willow Drive Baptist Church in Lake Jackson, Texas. LaVon was retired from Dow Chemical in Freeport, Texas. LaVon is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Linda Pelliccia Culpepper; four daughters, Mary Moritz (Blaine) and Alex Culpepper of Lake Jackson, TX, Angela Culpepper and Samantha Culpepper of Pittsburgh, PA; mother, Gladys Culpepper of Lockhart, TX; brother, Samuel LaWayne Culpepper of Lockhart, TX; and five grandchildren, Tristin Moritz and Cameron Moritz of Lake Jackson; Dameon Bierman and Zoiey Bierman of Ashville, NC; Bentley Culpepper of Henderson, Texas; and one uncle, Merle Arnold of Shawnee, OK. David Alfred Schubert

David Alfred Schubert passed away on July 25, 2017 at the age of 89 from complications resulting from a fall.  He was a lifelong resident of Niederwald, Texas where he was born on April 22, 1928.  David lived a peaceful country life with his wife of 67 years, Adeline Duesterheft Schubert.  He was a quiet man with a wry wit.  He found humor in most everything and you never quite knew what practical joke or funny story was hidden behind his sly smile.  He loved deer hunting and fishing, and spent tireless hours outdoors in search of the big buck or fish. David spent his early years roaming the fields near his home and working on the family farm.  He graduated from Uhland High School and attended Texas Lutheran College for a period of time.  On the day of his high school graduation David met his sweetheart, Adeline who he married on October 30, 1949. McMahan resident Dorothy Duke Johnson, 93, died July 18, 2017, at the Christopher House in Austin, Texas. Dorothy Helen Duke Johnson was born February 23, 1924 in Austin, Texas to Wilder Morgan Duke and Mary Ellen Lyons Duke. Dorothy grew up in Beaumont, Texas surrounded by her mother's large Irish family. Her maternal grandparents had emigrated from Ireland. After graduating from South Park High School, she traveled to California to visit relatives and work in support of the WWII effort. Following the war, she returned to Beaumont, to enjoy her family, friends and raising her two girls. Dorothy was an excellent seamstress and quilter. She sewed dresses for both her girls and granddaughter. She later moved to Houston where she and her husband Raymond Johnson lived until they built their home in McMahan, Texas in the early 1970's. There they raised cattle, travelled, and enjoyed many wonderful years there together. Dorothy was active in the Delhi Quilt Guild. Geraldine Ohlendorf, a lifelong resident of Lockhart, Texas, passed away on July 6, 2017. Gerry loved life and found great fulfillment in service to family, church, and community. She gave tirelessly to her family and the children of Lockhart, shared passionately her musical talents through church and school, and worked enthusiastically to preserve Caldwell County’s historic courthouse. She was always ready for adventure and loved to play bridge, go to book club, or have coffee with her friends. She loved to organize family events, and was especially pleased when everyone could be together. Gerry was born to Burma and Harry Retherford on April 18, 1931. She grew up surrounded by family; her aunts and uncles, cousins, and grandparents were her neighbors. Gerry and her older sister Lola spent their youth playing with their cousins under the oak trees of their yards. In the best decision of her life, she married Conrad Ohlendorf on January 26, 1951, when she was nineteen years old. Beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, Mr. Alvino Mendez, 86, passed away peacefully at his home in Lockhart, surrounded by his family, on July 1, 2017. Mr. Mendez was born on Sept. 12, 1930, to Pablo and Francisa Mendez. He was an entrepreneur and businessman, the owner and operator of Mendez Grocery in Lockhart for many years. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Armandina Mendez; three brothers; one sister; and one grandson. He is survived by nine children: sons, Tommy, Richard, Paul, Albert, Sam and Jesse Mendez, and daughters, Mary Castaneda, Alice Black and Connie Alva; 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services will be at 10 am, Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at McCurdy Funeral Home. Interment to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Virginia Lee Johnston Andrews has moved on to her final resting place in Heaven on July 2, 2017, she was 73 years old just a few days shy of her 74 Birthday. She has joined her husband, Lonnie Andrews of the Austin/ Lockhart area; her parents, Frank and Eva Johnston of Elkhart Texas; a brother and 2 sisters from Palestine; along with several brother-in laws and a sister -in -law; there must be a heck of a party going on. Virginia greatly loved her 3 Ps (Pets, Plants and Pretties). Most days she could be found working in one of the 4 greenhouses, shopping for more pretties, tending to her African Greys or the stray cats in her neighborhood. She was a Collection and Loan Manager for several businesses in the Austin area of which she retired many years ago from Westell Communications. Dr. Philip Arthur Wales, Captain in the United States Navy, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, was called home on Monday, June 26th at the age of 98 years and 2 weeks. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Mary Elizabeth Schneider Wales, along with their three children, 9 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. Dr. Wales was a life long healer, graduating from UT Medical School in three years, an accelerated program that allowed him to get to the Pacific theater by the height of WW II. Most of Dr. Wales’ active duty time was spent on the island of Ulithi, the westernmost of the Caroline islands, east of the Philippines. After the war Dr. Wales continued to serve as a doctor in the Naval Reserve for 30 years, attaining the rank of Captain. In 1948, he began his private practice in Lockhart, Texas with Drs. O.K. Paul Carl Gassenmayer of Elgin, passed away on June 24, 2017. Paul was born on December 8, 1933 in Rochester, NY.  He is preceded in death by his parents Paul and Gertrude Gassenmayer and former wife Rebecca Livengood Gassenmayer.  He is survived by his loving wife Margaret Gassenmayer, step siblings, Nancy Breeding and Robert Keller of Pennsylvania, daughter Lori Gassenmayer-Brunson and husband Paul of Austin, step-daughter Donna McClary of Lockhart, step-sons Kevin McClary and wife Susan of Del Valle, Gary Griffin and wife Vicki of Alvin, Craig Griffin and wife Laurel of Round Rock, Jerry Griffin and wife Jenny of Katy.  He was "Opa" to 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons. William (Bill) Thomas Voigt, Sr., 84, of Lockhart, Texas passed away on June 20, 2017 peacefully after a battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully with his children at his bedside. He was born on January 29, 1933 in Jourdantan, Texas to Sam and Ella Nite Voigt. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 64 years, Shirley Carlene Voigt; his son, William Thomas Voigt, Jr.; two sisters, Gladys Boling and Luella Duran; and four brothers, Walter Voigt, Charlie Voigt, Orbin Voigt and Clifton Voigt. Betty Jean (Lewis) Franks, a great spirit who loved her family, friends and life in general, died of heart failure at the age of 90 on May 26, 2017 at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio.      She died peacefully with family members at her bedside who made sure she knew that she had been much loved by all who were fortunate enough to know her.      Born to Dock Lindsey and Mary Elizabeth Mosley Lewis on June 18, 1926 in Graham, Oklahoma, she was the last of five siblings still alive. Sisters Emma Marteil Bramlet, Media Pearl Stueve and Mary Rountree and brother Russell Lewis all preceded her in death.      The central fact of her life was that for 71 years she was married to her beloved Curtis Charles Franks, who survives her at the age of 91.     They met in Lockhart after her family moved to Texas from Oklahoma, then they married in 1946, shortly after Curtis returned from the Pacific at the end of World War II.      They did their part for the post-war baby boom by ...

She was united in holy matrimony to Johnnie Lee Brawley, Sr., and to this union seven children were born. Edgar Clarence Black, Jr., 91, of Lockhart passed away June 2, 2017 at his home surrounded by family and friends. Edgar was born on Nov. 3, 1925 in Delhi, Texas to Edgar Black, Sr. and Myrtle Baldwin Black. The family moved to Lockhart in 1932 to open a grocery store and meat market that came to be known as Black's Barbecue. After graduating from Lockhart High School in 1943, Edgar attended Texas A&M in College Station. He soon volunteered for the Navy and served four years in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war he returned to Lockhart to marry the love of his life, Norma Jean Nolte on June 20, 1948. The couple moved to College Station to complete his college degree in accounting. After graduation Edgar turned down a job with Exxon in Houston to return and manage the family businesses in Lockhart. For 60 years Edgar and Norma Jean successfully grew the family businesses, Black's Barbecue, Northside Grocery and Market and the Lockhart Sausage Company.
