He suffered a heart attack while playing his guitar and sitting around a campfire with friends.
He was born to Henry M. and Myrtle Perry Voigt on March 22, 1940 in Lockhart Texas. Cotton grew up in the Luling area and was blessed to be in a wonderful family, whom he loved with all his heart. He graduated from Luling High School in 1958, and then became a member of the National Guard also in Luling. His love for music began at a young age. It was not long before he realized that he was a talented musician. In 1959 at the age of 19, he, along with three of his good friends, began playing their music together and formed “The Moods” which was a popular dance band in south Texas. Cotton was known as the “left-handed” bass player. This love of music helped pay his way for his secondary education where he attended the University of Texas Electronics School. He earned a degree in Electronics as a communications engineer. He worked for thirty years in the cable and fiber optics industry for Morrell Industries and The Karnack Corporation which was owned by Lady Bird Johnson and then formed his own company known as LH Construction Company. It was at this time that he became a certified pilot. After retiring, he began his trail riding days which was his most enjoyable hobby. He traveled all over the United States, where he rode in many memorial and charity based trail rides. He made countless friends along the way.
Cotton is survived by his sisters, La Nell Hart of Austin and Carol Voigt of Luling, as well as many cousins, aunts and uncles, his daughters Krista Voigt of College Station and Pam Wick and husband Bo of Hallettsville. His grandchildren; James, Donny, and Elizabeth Hair of College Station and Amanda (Philip), Cole, Evan and Cullen Wick of Hallettsville, and one great-grandchild, Brynleigh Elise. Cotton was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Myrtle Voigt, his brothers Raymond Lavern (R.L.) and Michael Voigt and brother-in-law W.A. “Bill” Hart.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of The Moods, the Luling Class of 1958, and his trail riding friends.
Family will receive friends at McCurdy Funeral Home at 10:00 A.M, Monday, April 1, 2013, with services following at 11:00 A.M. Graveside services will be held at the family cemetery in Pettytown.

Memorials may be made to the Luling Oil Museum or the donor’s choice.

He was born on June 29, 1937 in Monroe, Connecticut to Merwin S. and Mabel (Smith) Burr. Known as “Junior” to his older brothers and sisters, Merwin attended Newtown High School until enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1955. He was honorably discharged in 1967 as a Staff Sergeant, having earned the Purple Heart during one of his tours in Vietnam. After returning to Connecticut to raise his family, he worked as a prison guard, truck driver, and volunteer fire fighter.

Merwin married Gladys on January 15, 1983 and they relocated to Tampa, Florida in 1990, where he kept busy as a car detailer, racecar enthusiast, and security guard. After Gladys passed away in 2004, he retired to Texas and moved in next door to his eldest daughter. He enjoyed bird watching from his kitchen window (he named each of the hummingbirds, cardinals and woodpeckers), baking peanut butter flavored desserts, and socializing with friends from church. Merwin loved watching NASCAR races, bragged about his grandchildren to anyone who would listen and shared his home with his buddy, Ziggy the cat. His good advice and listening ear was never more than a phone call away. Merwin lived out his personal motto “Live, Laugh, Love” every day as a beloved father, grandfather, friend, and neighbor.

Merwin is survived by his children, Debra Burr DiFronzo of Dale, TX; Tammy Burr of Brookfield, CT; Kelly Burr Giglio (Bob) of Columbus, OH; Merwin “Chip” Burr, Jr. (Tracy) of Warren, CT; Diane Bawlick Amuso (Joe) of Stafford, CT; and Susan Bawlick Pagan (Ivan) of Brookfield, CT; twelve grandchildren, Heather Giglio, Elizabeth DiFronzo, Jason Waldron, Rocco DiFronzo Jr., Robert Giglio III, Amy Cooper, Ashley Burr, Brandon Burr, Molly Burr, Rachel Williams, Daniel Burr and Caleb Burr; and two great-grandchildren, Katrina and Carson. He is also survived by four siblings, Dorothy Boland of Seymour, CT ; John Burr (Wilma) of Boston, MA; Nancy Redente of Winterhaven, FL; and Ruamy Burr of Newtown, CT. He was predeceased by his wife, Gladys; parents, Merwin S. and Mabel; and brother, Howard.

Services will be held at 10am on Saturday, March 23rd at Bateman Baptist Church, 2691 FM 20, Red Rock, TX, 78662, with burial immediately following at Bateman Cemetery. A memorial service is planned for late June in Connecticut. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the doctors and staff of Seton Edgar B. Davis Hospital in Luling, TX for their attentiveness and loving care. Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Lung Association, 1301 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Suite 800. Bock on November 16, 1957. Joyce and Edgar spent forty one years together prior to his death in 1998. Her lives with Edgar, and her memories of being the wife of a cotton farmer, were her treasures.

Joyce loved animals and especially loved her cats, many of which were rescues. Even when she didn’t have a kitty of her own, she would make sure and leave cat food on her back porch for any stray that might pass by and need a meal.

Joyce’s sense of humor was legend among her family. The highlight of many birthday parties was reading the birthday card she had given. She had a knack for finding the funniest cards and giving them at just the right time. We will miss her sense of humor and seeing the twinkle in her eye.

Joyce was preceded in death by her sisters, Edith Marie Satterfield, Margaret Beaver, and Rebecca Gassenmayer. She is survived by her sister Gail Livengood Robinson and five nieces, two nephews, and a loving group of eight great nieces and four great nephews all of whom will miss her more than words can say.

Family received friends at McCurdy Funeral Home from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Monday, March 4, 2013. Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at McCurdy Funeral Home in Lockhart. Interment to follow at Lockhart City Cemetery in Lockhart.
