Born November 25, 1931 in Opelousas, Louisiana, he died on April 1, 2017 in San Antonio, Texas, at the Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Helen E. Burttschell David; their children Sue Haschke, Steve David, and Sarah Luecke, and their spouses; eight grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren who call him “PawPaw” ; and his beloved dog, Lady. He is also survived by his brother Donald, and his much-loved extended family in Louisiana. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. After the war he earned a B.A. in English Literature from St. Edward University in Austin, Texas, and later a Masters in Social Work from the University of Texas in Austin. His distinguished career as a family therapist in Dallas and San Marcos spanned over five decades. He authored a textbook chapter and a number of articles and presentations related to his work with head-injured patients and their families.
Carroll delighted his family and friends with his lifelong zest for learning. His interests included history, philosophy, mathematics, classical literature, tennis, golf, and furniture-making. He was an advocate for social justice, and had several letters to the editor published in the Austin American Statesman. He loved singing and lively political discourse at family gatherings.
He was the patriarch of our family and will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.
Visitation will begin at 3 PM, followed by a Memorial service at 4 PM, on Sunday, April 9, 2017, at Pennington Funeral Home in San Marcos, Texas. Burial will be 0915 hours on Monday, April 10, 2017, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
