Doris Marie Steenhagen was a woman of strength, integrity, and a deep love for her family and friends. She passed away peacefully in her home at Brookdale Senior Living in San Marcos, Texas, on March 16, 2016.
She was born on February 28, 1927 in Prospect, Virginia, to Edgar Brisentine and his wife Cora. Two sisters and two brothers completed the family. After Cora died when Doris was five, Edgar raised the family on his own. Doris attended secretarial school after graduating from high school, and then began to work in Richmond, Virginia. In January 1951, Doris took a secretarial position for the National Park Service, where she soon caught the eye of Robert Steenhagen, a landscape architect. They were married in August 1952.
After marrying, Doris devoted herself full-time to raising her twin girls, Deb and Cindy, born in 1953, and her son, Jim, born in 1957. For Doris, family was the most important part of her life. She was an excellent mother: patient, loving, kind and compassionate. She instilled in her children a love of reading, and read often to them. Doris’ strong belief in the value of close family connections continued after her children grew up; she and Bob traveled often to visit their grown children and grandchildren.
Doris and Bob also both traveled together to other destinations, such as Canada, the Caribbean, Asia and Europe. When home in Denver, Doris and Bob had a wide circle of friends with whom they socialized frequently.
Her loving nature and friendly personality endeared Doris to many, and she made friends wherever she lived. She consistently remained positive in her outlook, always seeking to find the best in any situation. She enriched her family relationships with kindness and wisdom. She will be greatly missed.
Doris was preceded in death by Robert Steenhagen, her husband of 60 years; her parents; two sisters and one brother. Survivors include her brother Kenneth Brisentine and wife Bettye; her three children: Cindy and husband John McDonell of Petersburg, Alaska; Deb and husband Walt Stachon of Omaha, Nebraska; Jim and wife Celeste Monforton of San Marcos,Texas; four grandchildren: Rena and Logan McDonell, Greg and David Stachon; and two great-grandchildren, Levi Stachon, and Dax Ronn Stachon; and other relatives and friends.
Family Service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, March 24, 2016 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Doris and Bob were my dear friends for over 40 years. I had a soft spot in my heart for both of them. I’m sad to hear of Doris’ passing. My condolences to the entire Steenhagen family.
