Virginia “Bitsy” Witte

Date of Birth: October 13, 1938  |   Date of Death: August 5, 2010   |   Service Date:

Virginia “Bitsy” Cox Witte, 71, of San Marcos passed away August 5, 2010 at her home surrounded by her loving family.  Virginia “Bitsy” was born October 13, 1938 in San Marcos, Texas.  She attended Southwest Texas State University and graduated from Texas A & I University and went on to fulfill her dream of teaching for 31 years until retiring due to her illness.

Virginia “Bitsy” Witte was not only the light of her family’s life, but was the thread that held us all together until that bond was woven tight enough to hold us together for life.  She not only meant the world to her family, but also to her friends and every student who was lucky enough to pass through her classroom door.

The City of San Marcos proclaimed May 5, 1998, “Virginia Witte Day”.  She received the Heritage Association’s “Most Worthy Citizen Award for Education”; the “Principal’s Outstanding Educator Award”; and in  2006, the “San Marcos High School Distinguished Alumnae Award”.  There are too many accomplishments to list them all but she was particularly proud of starting the first Boy Scouts of America Explorer Post and Academic Decathlon Team.  Bitsy was truly an exceptional mother; our beloved Bitsy is gone but will never be forgotten.  She was an exquisite beauty who was even more beautiful on the inside.  She could never give or receive enough love.  She opened her arms to everyone just as God as opened his arms to welcome her home.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Chester Witte; her children, Kathy Witte Lee and husband, Steve, Kelly Witte Wommack and her husband, Dennis, Mark Witte and wife and LeeAnn Witte Balke andh her husband, Virgil, Liz; her pride and joy, her grandchildren, Eric, Adam and Jack Lee of San Marcos, Hayden Witte of Denton and Amy Balke of Brenham.  She is also survived by her loving sisters, Carol Jean Reardon  of Mason and Julie Bowden of Plano.

Family will receive friends at Pennington Funeral Home, from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M., Saturday, August 7, 2010. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 P.M., Sunday, August 8, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church in San Marcos, with the Rev. Ryan Jenson and the Rev. Bill Henderson officiating.  Interment will follow at the San Marcos City Cemetery.

Arrangements under the care and guidance of Pennington Funeral Home, San Marcos, Texas, 512-353-4311.  Obituary and guestbook online at www.penningtonfuneralhome.com

Please accept my most sincere condolences on the passing of Mrs. Witte. She was one of the most remarkable teachers that I had growing up in San Marcos. Mrs. Witte always referred to us as her little darlings, but she was the most darling woman of all. Even though I have been out of SMHS since 1995 and heard so many people refer to her as Bitsy…i could never bring myself to call her anything but Mrs. Witte! We loved Mrs. Witte very much and we will miss her even more, but we relieved that she is no longer having to endure any pain or continued treatment. Thank you for sharing her life with us!

    Sincerely,

    Daniel Guerrero

    To Mr. Witte and Kelly:

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I loved Mrs. Witte dearly and the last time we spoke we laughed like it was no tomorrow, that is how I will always remember her. That sweet smile, and that southern charm. San Marcos is just a little more sad today, and will never be the same without her.

Even to this day, Mrs Witte stands out in my memory as the best educator I have known. After 33 years, I can still see her smile and hear her words of wit and charm. The school and the community are richer for having known her blessings. To the family I offer my sincere sincerest sympathies. May she rest in peace.

We would like to have attended Bitsy’s funeral, but eleven members of our family had already planned a get-together for this weekend. Bitsy was very, very special. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
